single coil guitars , bless their heart , they sound amazing , but I ’ m constantly keeping them in line . They ’ re finicky . The temperature changes if the sun comes out and the humidity rises . But this guitar , I can put it through the ringer , play it outside , play it in an ice-cold theater , play it in a sweaty basement . It just holds together well . It stays in tune tonally . I can get just about any sound I need out of it . The bridge pickup sounds huge and wide and resonant , but the neck pickup is the P-90 … which is a cool , thick kind of texture for a neck pickup . If I go on the road for one or two shows these days , this is pretty much the only guitar I ’ ll bring with me . And I know it can do just about anything .
[ WM ] I saw you ’ ve got a 60 ’ s Fender Bassman amp head .
[ Cory ] Yes , it ’ s a 1965 . The AB 1 65 is the model on that one . So , Channel 1 and Channel 2 , you can jump ‘ em , they ’ re in phase with one another . I had a guy in town , a buddy mod Channel 1to be a Marshall type circuit . There ’ s a bit more a presence and gain on Channel 1 . Now . I put the big blue capacitors back in there from the sixties . It ’ s a great amp . I found it a crazy deal on Craigslist probably six or seven years ago . I think I paid $ 800 for that head . Pretty crazy .
[ WM ] Wild . I saw you got a Bad Cat head in one of your photos too .
[ Cory ] So that ’ s not mine , but I do play it a lot . It ’ s a buddy of mine that it just sits in a studio down the street and anytime I get the chance I ’ ll hit ‘ em up and say , “ Hey , can I borrow this for our session or something ?” Because that Bad Cat Head is essentially a DC 30 Matchless . It sounds awesome . I love it , there ’ s so many tonal capabilities . So in the studio it ’ s very inspiring just to reach down and just adjust one thing at a time and see where it takes me .
But to be honest , the last year or two I really haven ’ t been playing a lot of amps . I got the Quad Cortex last summer and I ’ ve just been so shocked by it . It sounds awesome . And you can capture your own amps … which I did . So I captured the Bassman and I captured a Matchless that was here for a while . I ’ ve just got different mics placement on the cabs to kind of give it a wider depth . But I ’ ve been a big fan of having the exact same amp on both sides because they respond identically . It sounds more like a double tracked feel on a record .
[ WM ] I saw that you use an EBow . Not a lot of guys use those . Phil Keaggy notably does .
[ Cory ] Yes , I haven ’ t had it for long . I think I got this for Cody ’ s new record because I had a feeling I was going to want to mess around with it . I ’ ve been really enjoying it as a studio tool , it it can do so many things . I mean , once you throw a couple plugins on it and if you play around with how it sits on the right pickup , it can kind of jump the octave on its own kind of randomly and it just has a very wild , unexpected kind of tonality to it , which is to me is really inspiring .
