people are saying , “ I ’ m just taking the whole thing about God and the Bible apart , and I want nothing to do with it . “ So I think we have to be careful when we throw around terms like that loosely and label people who are evaluating their religious experience and using the Bible as their compass .
But I responded to them , “ I don ’ t really know all about that . I just know that I ’ ve been hurt by church people , and I love the church .” So what do we do when we ’ ve been the one with stones in our hands , and we ’ ve been the one in position to be stoned ?
So that ’ s kind of the heart behind that song , and it ’ s already been resonating with so many people because it ’ s just so honest , but also , like you said , that there ’ s still so much hope In it .
[ WM ] Well as to deconstruction , even C . S . Lewis deconstructed for a while and came back stronger than ever , so it doesn ’ t have to be a dirty word .
[ Tauren ] Right !
[ WM ] And then I would say , the things you ’ re saying about what you want to bring to your music , that ’ s what impact is all about because without those things , without what you ’ re saying , it just becomes disposable music , which is most of the music that ’ s out there . Most music is disposable . It will be long forgotten in two or three years from now . Even if it ’ s a chart-topping hit , it ’ s no big deal in a few years , right ?
[ Tauren ] Yes . Absolutely . I think we have the opportunity to really say something . And like I said , I think there ’ s a place for it all . I don ’ t want to be at the gym trying to get my calorie burn on and be thinking about all of the troubles and the woes in the world . I understand there ’ s a place to just celebrate and dance and all of that , but my bigger point is when that ’ s what dominates the sonic landscape .
[ WM ] Exactly .
[ Tauren ] We have to see what that says about us . If music is one of the metrics that we use to evaluate the consciousness of humanity , then what do the Global 100 songs on Spotify tell us about what we are all wrapped up in ? And I think that those questions need to be asked so that we can get to better answers , but it ’ s going to be up to us as the creators of the music to ask the questions .
[ WM ] Isaiah 59:17 mentions an additional piece in the armor of God , The Cloak of Zeal . That cloak covers our backsides . And who is behind us but our own brethren ? It ’ s our zeal that keeps us going following mistreatment from within the church . Any thoughts on this
