The C shaped neck is well rounded, and the fretboard edges almost feel rounded in your hand. Open faced vintage styled tuners do an excellent and accurate job of tuning the strings. The onboard electronics are Fishman Presys VT electronics providing an inside the sound hole volume and tone adjustment. The 9-volt battery compartment and ¼” instrument input are at the bottom of the body for ease of access.
The new Cort logo is inlayed in the headstock of the instrument with a subdued matte black finish. When played acoustically the Cort Core- MC Ovangkol has a full and warm tone thanks to the cedar top and ovangkol back and sides. It was very articulate with a defined middle frequency and a bass tone that is satisfying but not over the top. This Cort Core really lends itself to fingerstyle picking with individual notes ringing clearly. When I plugged it into an amplifier, I was surprised at the difference in tone with a more middle frequency forward flavor perfect for songwriters and praise team players to cut through the mix. I was able to warm things up with the Fishman tone control placed in the middle position too.
The Cort Core-MC Ovangkol acoustic / electric surprised me not only in its more boutique forward cosmetics but also in the diversity of tone it generated. For a guitar priced at only $ 899.99 street I would put the Cort up against American made guitars in the $ 1500 to $ 2,000 range for playability, tone and looks. Visually the Cort Core-MC leans toward a handmade boutique instrument with the top finish, side and back ovangkol wood, open faced tuners, no dot fretboard and matte black headstock.
The Cort Core-MC Ovangkol acoustic / electric also includes a nicely padded and embroidered deluxe Cort gig bag. If you are looking for an acoustic / electric guitar that punches way above its price point, I recommend you give the new Cort Core-MC Ovangkol a test drive and you’ ll still have money left over for a new guitar strap, capo and tuner!
