And that’ s all I played through on the entire Super Sessions album. Which I really think sounds really good for having been recorded in this little studio of mine. The drums sound great. The drummers are Adam Wirdzek, who’ s a phenomenal drummer – I just met him a year and a half ago – and the other drummer is Tyler Coomes. And his brother played bass, Erick Coomes, sons of Tommy Coomes.
[ WM ] So Tommy Coomes goes back to your days, the beginning of Jesus music and his band Love Song. And didn’ t you play a little bit with Love Song too at some point?
[ Phil ] Yeah, I toured with them September, October, November of 1973.
[ WM ] It’ s remarkable that his sons have grown up to be great musicians and now you did a record with them.
[ Phil ] Pretty cool. And this is the second record I did with his sons. The first one’ s called Up All Night, which is on my Bandcamp site. It’ s just incredible jams with just the three of us. But then this one I was jamming in December with Adam and then in January was jamming with Erick and Tyler. And instead of two albums with each, I thought, well, just put the 10 songs together on one LP. And I think everything that you hear on that album was improvised on the spot, except for a tune called“ Barefoot,” which actually was improvised on my Acoustic Sketches 3 album. It opens that CD. And I told Adam, I said,“ I’ d love to do an electric version of‘ Barefoot’ because that’ s one of my favorite instrumentals.” And I copied pretty much every lick that I did on the acoustic. I did it on the electric on a nice clean tone.

[ WM ] I need to hunt that song down. So back to your What a Day record which was the first place we see a guitar in your hand. Tell us about that Nylon string guitar on the album cover?
[ Phil ] It was an Alvarez. I played that along with my Mark Evan Whitebook acoustic on What a Day. I played bass, drums and keys
