The proof was in the playing of this D-18 . The lack of gloss finish , although we are all accustomed to seeing this on Martins , allows the wood of the guitar to breathe better and resonate more fully . I hear more nuanced harmonics when strumming the D-18 Satin than I do on a new Gloss finish . There seem to be more pure overtones with the Satin finish that are muted with the Gloss finish . I wasn ’ t expecting to like or appreciate this new Martin feature so much until I spent time playing and listening to it . Some Martin purists might not be a fan of the Satin finish , Amberburst finish or Aged Toner Natural finish , but the standard Gloss finished D-18 is still available .
If you are a player and collector like me , a Martin D-18 is a must on the wish list . The question now is which style of finish do you go with ? The street price on the Martin D-18 in all three finishes is only $ 2,399 which includes a hardshell case and the Martin lifetime warranty .
Martin ’ s attention to detail and craftsman shine through their instruments especially the iconic guitars like the D-18 that are legendary . Although they come as acoustics the D-18 can also be upgraded with electronics at the Martin factory for an additional $ 195 , or you can add your own pickup with your favorite luthier once it is in your possession .
I ’ m very fond of my Martin D-28 but also feel the need for a D-18 . Martin has made this decision harder by offering three great finish choices for an instrument that remains one of their top sellers . I recommend you play the D-18 guitars in the different finishes for yourself and let your ears decide as much as your eyes . You ’ ll be pleased with your instrument investment whichever Martin D-18 you go with .
