I want to let God say what He wants to say and do what He wants to do even if it ’ s ugly and not necessarily approachable . I try to make sure that I ’ m always available for ideas , even if they come at three in the morning or the most inconvenient moment possible . That ’ s what I ’ ve asked God to bless me with , so I ’ ve gotta be up for the cost of switching it on . I try to make sure I ’ m diligent with that kind of preparation when I ’ m writing for myself so that when i get into a co-writing environment , I feel like I have things to bring to the room . Things that I believe in , but also things I can offer up open handedly .
[ WM ] Yes , absolutely ! If everyone wants what ’ s best for the song , instead of just their own ideas to make the cut , there ’ s a much better chance for success .
[ Chris ] Yeah , that ’ s why I think it ’ s really important to write with people you trust , and who you believe in and who believe in you . I think the relationship , in the context of writing , is maybe the most important currency . Having rapport with people because of that relationship breeds security and security breeds authentic conversations .
If I ’ m not secure with people I ’ m writing with , I ’ m not going to be able to be authentic or be able to speak my mind . When you have a relationship with people , it kind of takes all the nonsense out of the equation . I ’ ve been blessed to be able to build relationships with a lot of really amazing writers in the worship space . “ Plead The Blood ” is a great example . I got to write that song with Brandon Lake , Cody Carnes , Pat Barrett , and Alexander Pappas . And I have great relationships with all those guys and we ’ ve been friends for years . Luckily there ’ s enough rapport with us all , that everyone is able to kind of wear their heart on their sleeve . I think that ’ s how you tap into a really special place is when you can find something that ’ s not only real to you , but also real to the people that are going to be listening to it .
[ WM ] Wow . Yes . There was gold in so much of what you just said . And this is perfect segue into talking about this incredible song you just recently released ! Oh , my goodness , I was so moved the first time I heard it . I ’ ve been a worship leader for the last 14 years and I can just see our churches declaring this song in our services . I love the part in the music video where you guys are just pleading the blood over different things and you specifically say “ schools ”, which is not a word you necessarily hear in a worship song . But how we need the blood of Jesus prayed and declared over our schools right now ! So , I would love to know
