[ WM ] How about for vocal mics in the studio and on stage ?
[ Shane E ] So , for live recording on stage , we ’ ve just fallen in love with the AEA KU5 Supercardioid . It ’ s a ribbon mic , but their cancellation is just phenomenal . We did a live recording at Liberty University , and they swore that you could never use a live vocal mic in that room because of the slapback and just so much reverb in the room . And man , we used it all . We used all the live vocals , and the KU5 sounds amazing . Any kind of live recording , we ’ re using those now . We used to use the Shure SM7 ’ s , which are great for live recording .
But if you were just asking me what my favorite vocal mic to use is , I love the Shure SM58 . It ’ s still my favorite .
[ WM ] That ’ s great . Well , you can hammer nails with an SM58 too . I mean , it ’ s just rugged .
[ Shane E ] I just think it ’ s the best . I just love the way it sounds . If ever people ask me , what do you want to say on our back line , I ’ m always , “ Put a 58 cap on that t thing .” It ’ s my favorite one .
[ WM ] That ’ s wild . You have a new song , “ You ’ ve Already Won ,” that I really like . I ’ ve watched the video . Tell us about it .
[ Shane B ] Love it . Yeah , so I was going through a tough time in lots of ways .
I mean , frankly , our whole world was in a mess , and a buddy of mine named Brian Fowler texted me a lyric that said , “ God , I don ’ t know what you ’ re doing , but I know what you ’ ve done , and I ’ m fighting a battle you ’ ve already won .” And that lyric and the honesty of that lyric of just saying , God , I don ’ t know what you ’ re doing . I don ’ t like it . It doesn ’ t feel good . I don ’ t understand it . I don ’ t know what you ’ re doing , but I do know what you ’ ve done for me on the cross — the finished work of where you defeated sin , hell , death , and Satan . And I ’ m existing here today , and I can take advantage of everything you did on the cross for me . And not
You ’ ve Already Won
only that , because of your Word , I know how this thing ends , so I know how the story ends .
And so just after I heard that lyric , I kind of went into this little stairwell we ’ ve got here at the studio , basically a fire escape . It ’ s ugly , but it sounds awesome . And I just went in there and came around those two truths — the finished work of Jesus and the future grace of Jesus — and wrote a version of the song . I sent it to Brian , and we bounced it back and forth , and really quickly it became a song that we began to sing and encourage the saints with — that their future is super , super , super bright . No matter what the circumstances are , our forever future is secure and bright .
[ WM ] Yes , I love it . That ’ s great . What words of encouragement for fellow worship team members would you have for those who are week-in and week-out serving the Lord ? These are the same people that you work with in The Worship Initiative ; what would you say to uplift them ?
[ Shane B ] Oh man , it is an interesting work . Isn ’ t it just this thing we call ‘ worship ministry ’? It can be so discouraging and isolating . I feel like there are two paths that you could walk
