us to it . I think the Lord really set it up to where we do this together , and I think he ’ s given us opportunities to sing the Word .
[ Shane E ] And he starts singing , and I hop in and sing with him , and somehow it just works .
[ Shane B ] Well , it ’ s a unique thing with Shane E ( this guy right here ), ‘ cause you wouldn ’ t catch this dude actually playing , singing , or writing ever . You wouldn ’ t catch him doing it . You wouldn ’ t catch him dead doing it . ( laughing ) He just can do it .
[ Shane E ] And so from day one on , there wasn ’ t a rehearsal or planning things out .
[ WM ] That ’ s really something . All right , so let ’ s talk about your acoustic guitars . I know you guys have had a history of ‘ em . What have you used before ? What are you using now ? What are you using for direct boxes ? What are you happy with for pickups ? What ’ s going on with your acoustic guitar life ?
[ Shane E ] Yeah , what ’ s that pickup called that you ’ re using now that we love so much ? Is it the Anthem ? Is that what it ’ s called ? LR Baggs Anthem . Yeah . Oh man , that thing is incredible .
[ WM ] LR Baggs has a new pickup now that I just put in my Santa Cruz acoustic guitar , and it ’ s really great . The HiFi , so you might want to check that one out too , but go ahead .
[ Shane E ] Yes , we use the Anthem , and we actually changed the electronics on a few guitars because that thing has been so great . We ’ ve even used it on live recordings , recording just a direct sound . But it ’ s been phenomenal .
But right now we ’ ve been playing a Martin D 28 . We did a conference called Linger , and a friend of ours , Doug Gould , had one there , and Shane B fell in love with it . And we ’ ve been playing that for a few years , but there are so many great guitar builders and manufacturers out there . We love McPhersons . We have a few of those , and what Matt ’ s doing there at McPherson is phenomenal . He just builds an incredible guitar . I mean , nothing stays in tune like a McPherson .
We have some Gibsons that we ’ ve been playing , a J-45 type , and we played Breedloves for a long time . As you do this for 25 years , you tend to accumulate a few . So we mix and match , and in the studio we use all kinds of different stuff . But we love the different sounds and textures of all the different manufacturers . But right now , we ’ ve been playing the Martin D28 on the road , which is a great guitar .
[ WM ] What kind of strings are you using ? If you ’ ve got so many acoustics to keep strung .
[ Shane E ] Yes , we use the D ’ Addario coated ones . We ’ ve been using those forever and they ’ re a great company . We use their strings , and we use Planet Waves accessories . We ’ re big fans of what they are doing over there .
[ WM ] How about direct boxes ? Have you got something you like for DI that you find trustworthy ?
[ Shane E ] Yeah , we use the green Jensen boxes . We ’ ve been using those for years . We used to use those Avalon U5 ’ s . They ’ re just so big . So yeah , I think that Jensen ’ s are great direct boxes . We have a bunch of ‘ em .
