photo by Sean Hagwell in our futures , and I have real respect for both those guys . So yeah , they really made a mark , didn ’ t they ?
[ Bruce ] They did . So back to your plans , you ’ re to do this concert with Tom Hemby , which is great , he ’ s quite a great player too .
[ Phil ] Well , yeah , Tom is one of my all-time favorite players . It ’ ll be held in Nashville .
[ Bruce ] In closing , I ’ ve got another question for you . You ’ ve seen a lot of different music come and go , a lot of different musicians and artists and bands too . What advice do you have for your fellow guitar players out there ?
[ Phil ] Well , if you ’ re going to be a guitar player and for the Lord , meaning that everything you do , you do as unto the Lord . That ’ s what the Bible says : “ Whatever you do , do as unto the Lord and not just to please men ”. That ’ s my first advice . Do it unto the Lord . If you ’ re not accepted by the world , don ’ t worry about it . If you don ’ t get the accolades , if you don ’ t get the attention you think you deserve , give it to God . That ’ s my best advice . And then if you don ’ t get the attention from your Christian brothers and sisters in the industry of music , don ’ t worry about it either . So , I say play as unto the Lord .
[ Bruce ] Yes .
[ Phil ] And of course , invest in your music . Invest in it . Take it seriously . But don ’ t let it ruin your day . I mean if you feel you fall short of your goal . Learn to do it joyfully . And don ’ t worry about failing . You fail if you give up . So , don ’ t give up . That ’ s my best advice .
[ Bruce ] That ’ s good advice . I remember once we were talking , I said , “ What if you did a really great solo and it didn ’ t get captured correctly in the studio ?” And you just said , candidly , “ I could play another one .” I loved it .
[ Phil ] Yeah , one of my best solos , by the way , I think , ( one that Bernadette really likes ), I played on for Mickey Dolens back in 2010 or so . And the title song , “ Remember ”, which was a Harry
Nilsson song . That solo is one of my favorite solos too .
[ Bruce ] Wow .
[ Phil ] And I put it in the Notable Moments collection of solos I told you about . The bass player was Rob Birch , who played 20 years with Elton John . The drummer was Vinnie Colaiuta , and David Harris , who played keyboards , who was also the producer . So it was a beautiful little band for that album . And I was grateful to be a part of it .
[ Bruce ] You have been blessed with a gift of music in your life Phil , thank you for literally 50 years of sharing it with us all . You are in my “ Friend for Life ” club . Thank you for everything !
[ Phil ] Bruce , it ’ s been a pleasure and a blessing knowing you as well , my friend !
