Rebecca St . James we were a very traditional family in Australia , going to the private schools , and we sort of had that trajectory . What our move or migration to America showed us is what it really means to have to actually dig in and do life as a family . As brothers we had to learn the art of compromise , to learn the art of collaboration . We really cut our teeth raking leaves and mowing lawns as preteens when we first moved , because Dad was still working on finding a job and we had nothing . Everything went into the family fund . So , we learned this idea of collaboration with one another , we learned this idea of working together as a team , and we learned in many ways the importance of partnering with the family . That carried on and Rebecca began her career not to long after that , and the joke was that Dad needed cheap labor and he looked around and had five sons . And we became the road crew . Everything from stage managing , lighting the spotlights , running the smoke machine , and so on . I think it ’ s fair to say for Luke and myself , that it was in those years that we really saw the impact of music in different ways and understood and really fell in love with music . If it weren ’ t for that history and heritage , I think it ’ s very clear to say that For King & Country wouldn ’ t be in existence .
[ WM ] Shortly after God moved your family to Middle Tennessee in 1991 , came the beginning of Rebecca ’ s remarkable music career . Rebecca , first let me say congratulations to
Dawn you and your husband on the birth of your son , River Jack . Finally , a good story to come from 2020 ! I would love to hear about your newest project , “ Dawn ”. What a wonderful song and recording , so timely for the pandemic we ’ re all currently subjected to . How was this song birthed ?
[ Rebecca ] Aw thank you so much ! The concept of the song and album Dawn really came from a ‘ dark night of the soul ’ season that my husband and I walked through . It was marked by two miscarriages , job loss and heavy emotional pain . But God brought us into a new ‘ Dawn ’... a sunrise season after that time , beginning within us , and then extending to our circumstances . Since then He has restored so much , including blessing us with two more children ! I wanted to write about the hope , redemption and new life that God offers us even through some very challenging seasons .
