easier around crowded guitar cabinets or live rigs. Included accessories are intentionally simple, a robust swivel mount and storage pouch, keeping the emphasis on functionality rather than presentation. Roswell designed the microphone to tolerate extremely high sound pressure levels without audible distortion. That capability opens opportunities beyond studio work. Loud stage volumes, isolation cabinets, and high-powered modern amplifiers become practical recording sources without requiring pad switches or unusual gain staging.
In hy home studio, my favorite cabinet for recording guitar is a vintage Marshall JCM 800 1960A loaded with Celestion G12T-75 speakers paired with a Marshall JCM2000 DSL100, a combination known for its tight low end, pronounced upper frequencies, and articulate attack. Those characteristics make it an excellent test platform for evaluating a guitar microphone, as any harshness or exaggerated upper mids become immediately apparent. The DSL 100 has a pronounced upper-midrange bite and aggressive pick attack has made it one of the defining rock’ s defining amplifier, but it also exposes the weaknesses of many microphones.
Following Roswell’ s recommendations, I positioned the Cab Mic approximately six inches from the grille cloth and directly on the center of the dust cap, a placement that would normally be far too bright with most dynamic microphones. Instead, the microphone immediately delivered a balanced sound that retained all of the DSL100’ s articulation without the brittle edge that often requires corrective EQ. The amp still sounded unmistakably like a Marshall, but with a smoother, more natural top end that felt closer to what I hear standing in front of the cabinet.
I also evaluated the Roswell Cab Mic using the same amp but paired with a THD 2x12 cabinet loaded with THD Longhorn 12-inch speakers, each rated at 80 watts and built in the U. S. with British-style cones. This cabinet provided a distinctly different tonal reference
