[ Keith ] For the movers we have 10 – as the main workhorses . 6 are ceiling mounted – 2 in the auditorium , and 4 above the stage ; then 4 ( 2 sets of 2 ) at the corners of the stage at the top of the choir risers . Then we have another 4 that have some movement but aren ’ t of the “ whizzbang ” variety . They generally are used for adding a nice wash to the soffits to complement our banners , slides , or what-have-you on the day , but can also be reassigned as needed .
[ WM ] It seems to me that lighting in a church service is similar to a guitarist with a new pedal board . You don ’ t want to overdo it . What is your approach to lighting during your worship music time ?
[ Keith ] This is a bit of a fun one . My lighting team-lead is a genuine wizard with regards to ability – but for general operations , we lean much more conservative and understated . Our main goal in lighting is to enhance and complement , but not distract . Though for larger events , like our Festival of Carols , VBS , or Musical Boot Camp , we let him cut the brakes and set our hair on fire .
[ WM ] Ha ! That is funny . When it comes to keyboards your church is well equipped . You have a Kawai acoustic Grand and a few Nords . Some say , “ where the Nord is , the Lord is ”. How are you liking working with the Nords from the audio team ’ s vantage point ?
[ Keith ] Well , we ’ ve had the Electro 5 for some time , generally for pads and such , and for that it ’ s been great . But the Nord Grand is a more recent acquisition we picked up so as to help integrate our pianists more inclusively / intuitively with our orchestra – which is off stage to the side of the drums , the Kawai Grand then being far opposite stage from there , which creates a bit of disconnect .
Beyond that , the real sell point for us with the Nord Grand was “ touch ”, and that is what won out for us over some other available options . After that , the sound bank is great , and the unit is self-contained and relatively straight forward ,
