And I think that we could use some songs that actually don ’ t need to be in the context of Sunday morning , because frankly , that ’ s not where we spend most of our time . Anyways , that ’ s a sanctified time . But what about the rest of the week ? I ’ d love for there to be some songs that could help more faithfully narrate our life and our experience and how it relates to God and connects to God . And for that , we just need to sing about more things . I think we need to sing about more topics .
[ WM ] You ’ re right . The pool that lyrics come out of needs to be wider and deeper , doesn ’ t it ? And my sentiments are the same regarding the Psalms . So , I love the cover artwork for your project , and because the image shows so many roots yet all leading up to a beautiful singular blossom . And what are your thoughts on this ?
[ Sean ] Yes , I agree . I have so many thoughts . I love that you actually like it because at its most effervescent kind of existential level , I ’ m tired of artwork just being pictures of people . I want you to feel something . And I grew up with artwork , like you said , I was still going to the store and something catches your eye and you ’ re like , “ Ah , I just , I ’ m drawn to that ”. So this image did that for me . But there ’ s a lot of things happening . I use a lot of nature , particularly garden imagery in my songs , and I ’ ve always been moved by the reality that , especially with trees , but with any root system , the root system is three or four times larger than the canopy .
If that isn ’ t something that makes you want to pour a cup of coffee and think about for a couple hours , that ’ s kind of remarkable . And so , I wanted to capture the essence of inner work , of rootedness , of growth , what that actually means to God . What does it mean for that ? God isn ’ t concerned with you just growing quickly . He wants you to grow rightly , and that means that the roots have to grow deep man , and that they ’ re way bigger than what other people see , but also they lead to something remarkable and beautiful . So those are some of my thoughts about what you captured . Also , it is moving to me that the little girl is my daughter , and we captured her . She had this little bucket ; it is a little spigot that you ’ re supposed to pour out and water the flowers . And we told her to go water the flowers and instead of pouring it out , like you ’ re supposed to , she just turned it to the side and dumped all the water out . And it ’ s just like , “ Ah , I just love that you felt inclined to do it that way ”. And we captured her in that moment and it just felt really childlike and innocent and powerful and different .
[ WM ] That ’ s beautiful . In marketing , there ’ s a term called “ market clutter ”. And a good example that I used to use when I was an art director many years ago is I would walk down the cereal aisle at the grocery store and see what pops out , because everybody ’ s fighting for attention with the brightest colors . It ’ s not always the brightest colors that pop . It ’ s not
