so many of these movements are built around a personality . So much of this music is built around another concept that I think is really challenging for us these days and requires a lot of discernment . And it would be something like this , “ Anointing is not the same thing as charisma ”.
And I think we ’ re having a very hard time telling the difference . I also think that in many cases , if we can tell the difference , but it ’ s still bringing in the cash , we just don ’ t care . I think there ’ s plenty of things that are , I mean , goodness , without trying to just be overly critical , the worship movement , or even as a genre , it ’ s still really , really young .
It hasn ’ t , when I was a kid , when I really felt moved to somehow intertwine music and God , I did not have any other reason to do that except for that I felt really led to it or called to it or any of those really mystical things that are hard to describe because nothing about it was sexy . I couldn ’ t look to anything and be like , there wasn ’ t a massive Christian celebrity culture around it , and I ’ m really grateful for that . But that ’ s not the season that we ’ re in right now . And so I think there ’ s something there that is really challenging , and I don ’ t know if we really know what to do with it yet . And it ’ s definitely complicating things .
I see it kind of infecting a lot of our songs , like what we ’ re singing about , that they might sound really pretty and they might be meaningful on some level , but oftentimes they ’ re just really self-absorbed . And so I don ’ t know . I ’ m just trying to stay in my lane . I guess in responding to your question , as a songwriter , as an artist , I feel like what I ’ ve been trying to do is create some spaces on Sunday morning .
In my head , I haven ’ t always thought this way , but as I ’ ve gotten older , I really , really want and think that that time for the people of God to commune with God … the first priority should be ministering unto the Lord . Whatever the songs are , they should be lifting the banner of God so high that you couldn ’ t see around it if you tried . This is just like blessing God .
And so , I think that ’ s getting complicated because I think oftentimes we can go through a whole worship set and not even sing about God . But then I think there ’ s this other category that we have a really underdeveloped for , and I think it ’ s where I spend a lot of time in my songs . And maybe I would say it ’ s more about how to wrestle with God . Well , and I would say that the Psalms , the Psalms are the biggest resource we have in scripture , and that ’ s pretty much all that they are . They ’ re really personal , really vulnerable , somebody that seems to appreciate that God isn ’ t going to be scared of them or intimidated by them or not need a lawyer . They ’ re just laying their souls bare .
