This past Anaheim , CA NAMM show introduced me to some of the new offerings from the popular alternative instrument brand Reverend Guitars , a family-owned business based in Toledo , Ohio . I ’ ve played many of their instruments over the years , but it was a pleasure to receive the Reverend Club King 290 Guitar three tone Sunburst finish for review . Reverend ’ s designers are known for giving a nod to nostalgia , while providing modern play demands with some quirky and fun twists !
This model is part of their Bolt-On series so instead of a neck through design , as some of their models features , the Club King 290 has a six-bolt secured neck .
The semi-hollow body and modified cat-eye sound hole provide the King with an open-air sound , but no feedback issues since there is a center block . The entire body is made of Korina wood , except for the top which is solid Spruce for added tone . The new three tone sunburst finish really fits this instrument ’ s design , although it is available in midnight black , deep-sea blue , rock orange ( Tone Shop exclusive ), and cream .
The single coil pickups are Reverend ’ s own 9A5 pickups in the neck and bridge position . The top of the body features white binding . The Bigsby B-50 vibrato is a great feature on this instrument and stays in tune better thanks to the roller bridge and Reverend locking tuners on the headstock . The minimalist pickguard is just enough to protect the finish from your picking hand . Electronics include standard volume , tone , 3-way selector and a Bass Contour which is awesome . The neck is a tasteful roasted maple with a medium oval shape and topped with a rosewood fretboard with dot inlays . The satin finish neck plays fast and smooth in your
