function is most definitely what caught my eye . There are two tuner types and three settings for visibility . The chromatic tuner mode gives you a nice visible line North and South of true pitch and for every string I tuned , it locked on nicely without wavering all over the place . The other mode option is that of a strobe tuner . Now , some strobe tuners almost look like dancing stage lights and it ’ s hard to tell when you ’ re adjusting in the right direction . Anyone else feel that way ? This strobe action is smooth and easily deciphered as you make tuning adjustments .
The tuner can switch to being visible only when volume is off , or “ heel-down ” position ( T + S ). Or it can stay on no matter if your volume is zero or full-on ( T ). My favorite position ( T + P ) shows the tuner in “ heel-down ” position and then the screen will display a bar representing your volume level . My son , Sam , has the pedal setup on his board and his preference is the “ T ” position to show tuning all the time .
Sam is also enjoying the expression mode . Here ’ s what he has to say , “ This tuner is great , and the seamless switch to an expression pedal is very useful . I currently have the expression function set up for my Strymon BigSky . This will allow me to control certain parameters like overall mix or modulation . It will give me more dynamic and control over what I ’ m playing , whether it ’ s playing out of a big bridge or maybe playing melody lines during a prayer time .”
I really like the input being toward the heel on the right side rather than at the toe like my old volume pedal . The output is at the same place on the left side adjacent to the TRS expression output . The buffer circuit switch is internal and can be turned on or off by removing a couple of screws to expose the switch . Why do I need a buffer ? The more pedals you ’ re using , the more cable ( including patch cables ) you have in your signal … the more you could benefit from turning the buffer on . Also , the more pedals you use , the farther down the signal flow you may want to place your buffer . You ’ d probably notice it more in your high frequencies .
Other control options include the HI and LOW impedance switch . Switch to HI when your input is high impedance like guitar and switch to LOW when your input is coming from another pedal . The PITCH button will allow you to select standard 440Hz pitch reference frequency or an alternative .
