There ’ s MIDI In / Out / Thru on Left Side . On the Back are four TS inputs and outputs , two TRS Expression jacks , with a USB-C jack for control , updates , and MIDI . The unit is powered via a 2.5 mm input jack requiring 9-12vDC with 12 Watts . Also on the back are yellow LED Line Level indicators showing which ins and outs are set to line level . The H90 has a 48khz sample rate , 24-bit A / D , and 32-bit floating rate DSP . It weighs 1.85 lbs and is 2.5 H x 6.5 W x 5.25 ” D inches . With the H90 ’ s upgraded DSP , all the previous H9 algorithms are enhanced , including the pitch tracking and features only found on the individual dot-9 pedals .
IN USE : I ’ ve been looking forward to reviewing the H90 . I ’ m a big fan of Eventide gear . Most of my work has been in recording , and Eventide is a pro-studio staple . The H9 spoiled the guitar players . One was never enough . With so many beautiful effects , deciding whether it would be the Harmonizer , Ultratap Delay , Black Hole , Classic Rotary , or one of the many other-worldly effects was a tough choice . The H90 is much more than two H9s in one pedal . Two powerful DSP engines are running in parallel or in series . I see three main applications for the pedal . First , as a stereo pedal with two effects . Second , as two separate stereo pedals or two stereo effect inserts in a DAW . The third is a stereo pedal with an additional stereo insert to access three stereo effects in one pedal . You could also use it in your four-cable method etc . The H90 is a powerful processor , and fortunately , the layout is logical and user-friendly .
I quickly dialed down the overall effect mix from the first preset and locked it in as a tremendous preset for my church pedalboard rig . I ran through many factory ’ s presets , applied the same quick mix fix , and then saved and backed them up to the H90 Control app on my laptop . The pedal ’ s big display makes it easy to see the two effects on board and quickly customize them to your liking . Each Program comprises one or two effects with the option of including another stereo or two mono pedals via the inserts .
With so many presets , the H90 has a genius search tool . Push the Preset LED button to search by effect type like Reverb or Distortion , and then scroll through the corresponding algorithms like SP2016 Reverb or WeedWacker . Pressing the Perform knob , allows you to assign footswitches to performance parameters like active / bypass or tap tempo . We can also assign them to three Hotswitches that allow you to morph several parameters at once in real time .
I promise your bandmates will turn their heads at the complex sounds of your guitar ! You can now compete with keys by making gorgeous moving pads and synth lines . This is modern guitar at its finest ! I love the new algorithms ! Here ’ s a list of the 10 new effect algorithms : Polyphony , Prism Shift , Bouquet Delay , Head Space , WeedWacker , Even-Vibe , Wormhole ,
Instant Flanger , Instant Phaser , and the classic SP2016 Reverb . If you ’ re writing new songs , you ’ ll quickly know why it is called the “ Inspiration Engine ”.
My favorite feature is Bank Mode . Here , the programs are organized in banks of 3 for a total of 33 banks . You can instantly activate programs without searching . This is perfect for a compact live or studio board without a switcher . I also love this , as I can now organize banks as effect types , such as verbs , modulations , or pitch shifts , and have three versions simultaneously . For the studio , I can immediately give the producer three options for any given algorithm he ’ s looking for . It ’ s super efficient .
MY TAKEAWAY : The H90 is among the most incredible , unique , best-sounding pedals I ’ ve ever heard . Plugging into it makes my guitar sound better . Keyboard players will love this pedal .
As songwriters , we know the best songs have a unique sound that identifies them immediately . The H90 will provide a seemingly endless supply . I hope the H90 finds a place on your pedalboard or studio too . It ’ s truly a desert island pedal .
