that if I ’ m doing some quick scratch guitars . Sometimes I ’ ll run my board through a Soyuz Launcher to add some color . If I ’ m tracking my amps , I use an SM57 and a Slate ML-2 that ’ s usually emulating a 121 on the Vox or Jackson and an SM57 with a Cascade Fathead ribbon mic on the Tyler . I use 2 ML-2 ’ s to track acoustics . I ’ ve recently been playing around with the Universal Audio SD-1 , their take on an SM7b , and have enjoyed that for guitars and vocals . For plugins , I mostly use Logic ’ s stock compression and EQ ’ s . If I want to add some cool texture , I like the TAL-Chorus-LX , which is a free chorus plugin .
[ WM ] Your thoughts on modeling units vs . analog pedals ?
[ Emily ] I think that there ’ s a place for both ! Analog pedals are a lot of fun and make it easy to tweak things in the moment . Their simplicity helps keep me focused on what I ’ m hoping to get out of that particular effect without overcomplicating it . Digital pedals oftentimes leave space for infinite tweak-ability and let you adjust almost every parameter possible . A multi-fx unit like an HX Stomp is cool because it lets you try out different effect types that you may not need a standalone pedal for while also letting you run amps . I think my ideal setup has some of both !
[ WM ] Can you list one or two worship albums that inspire your own worship guitar playing ?
[ Emily ] Passion 2014 was a life-changing experience and is where I was inspired to take guitar seriously , so Passion : Take It All holds a special place in my heart . After the conference , I probably learned every song . Hillsong ’ s OPEN HEAVEN / River Wild was also pivotal for me . Guitars are very intentionally placed , and it ’ s a great example of how something simple can be the perfect thing a moment needs .
