[ WM ] Tell us about how you got started playing keys ?
[ Lydia Shaw ] I was homeschooled and grew up in a small town in Wisconsin on a farm . I have three older brothers and we had a family band . My parents led worship and spoke at churches all over America and later , international . As we got better at our instruments / singing , we joined them ! Started piano lessons at seven . We then moved to Kansas City to help launch IHOP ( 24 / 7 worship and prayer ). I started leading worship around 12 , and played and sang on many worship teams as a young teen . I would take my school books to the prayer room and stay for most of the day just immersed in the worship while doing my work or hopping on a team when there was a gap or a no show .
After high school , I went to Bethel School of Ministry in CA , and I played keys my whole time there ( about 12 years ). I played at the conferences and traveled with various artists from Bethel Music . Also did a lot of missions work with playing and teaching music in that time period .
I taught individual piano lessons for 15 years and group piano classes at the Bethel School of Worship for many years . I also taught a music class at the Bethel elementary school for 5-8th graders that led the chapel worship . I did that for eight years . And I was the Sunday Children ’ s Church worship pastor for four years .
I was everywhere with jobs , but it mostly revolved around music , worship , playing and teaching . All the things I love ! I think for a while there I had four small jobs to navigate and a kid or two !
In 2020 the Lord said to move to Nashville . So , my husband Chris and I did with our two ( now four ) children . We attend and I play at The Belonging Co currently . I travel with various Christian artists from word-of-mouth connections . I have the most supportive husband who lets me do what I love even if that means leaving town for a few days at a time and him doing some solo Dad time .
[ WM ] Who were your main keys influences ?
[ Lydia ] So many ! Jon Thurlow , my brother Luke Hendrickson , Alicia Keys , Jacob Collier , Norah Jones , and Carol Hall … one of my piano teachers who was a worship leader but
