up act for the preaching, nor are worship teams
meant to simply be a cover band for radiocharting
songs. It’s infinitely more important
than that, because to rob worship of its proper
dignity, is to allow “a form of godliness without
the power thereof”. Please comment on the
privilege and responsibility of the worship
leader?
[Zach] There is something that has been
implanted, I feel, by the spirit of God in a person
who has been born again, and their soul has
been reclaimed by a king. That desire is to see
their King enthroned and glorified. To see Him
walking in the fullness of His authority and to
see appreciation in the people that He bled for,
to see Him dually honored. I think that worship
leaders have the responsibility but also the
joy of ministering to the daily coronation of a
king. I can’t even think of a higher honor than
ministering to the daily coronation of a king.
nurture something in the heart of God. I’m not
saying there is anything lacking in the heart of
God, I’m just saying there is a desire in the heart
of God that we can minister to. That’s huge that
we can minister to the Lord and that He shows
up and He’s able to meet them.
[WM] The role of worship leaders has changed
during the Corona virus pandemic. Tell us some
effective ways worship leaders have adapted to
this crisis and what it means to the church in
the long term?
[Zach] One of the things that I’ve seen at
our church, the digital platform… first of all, I
don’t think that you’re going to be able to find
a perfect substitute for meeting together with
your brothers and sisters. There is nothing in
my heart and my mind that says I can do this
digitally and it’s just as potent. But in the midst
of what we’re dealing with I see people using
the digital platform to reach further than they’ve
reached in the past. It’s almost like, at one point
I thought, the church is always late to jump on
the technology that we have available to us. It’s
almost like in the middle of this Corona virus
God took a hold of the face of the bride and
looked her in the eyes and said, “When are you
going to use the gift that I’ve given you?” and
forced us to. Now we have to figure out how to
do it, so I’ve been leading worship over Zoom,
I’ve been leading worship on Facebook, and
it’s been a fascinating thing. The Holy Spirit is
not hampered by what we consider physical
barriers. In fact we were talking about some
of the simplicity of just a guy with a guitar, you
know, and sometimes people get tired of our
over production and our lights. Sometimes
we’re so clean and so excellent that there is no
sand and no blood left in our worship. There’s
something pretty and real about just getting on
Zoom with twenty other people and a guitar. It
At the same time there is the wholly spiritual
romance going on between a God of eternal
pursuit and between a people who, when their
hearts are lit with affection for their God, are in
eternal pursuit of that God. There is a saying
that a pastor can stir… that was inside the
heart of David. David knew the scripture. He
knew that Moses wanted to see God and that
the Lord told him that no one may see His face
and live. David knew that, and still in David’s
heart there was this cry, “My heart needs to
see His face, your face Lord I will seek.” That
he had a desire for something that was so
far beyond his physical ability to get his arms
around it. That he may be killed in order to get it
but he’s still willing to pursue. A worship pastor
has the ability to help to stir people hearts up
to that. God responds to pursuit, He doesn’t
respond to song lists. I don’t believe that when
I’m looking at a congregation that the man
standing in front of me is the Christ. I think that
he is the son of God but I think collectively we’re
the breath of Christ. And there is something of
the Lord that loves the pursuit of His people.
And when I’m leading those people I can pastor
them into falling more deeply in love with Him,
and its like there is the ability of the bride to
