Staff Changes
Nick Drew
Nick left the Cathedral staff
at the end of January, after
nearly two years with us as
Director of Fundraising and
Development. We owe him a
great deal, not least for the
present format of this
newsletter, and for the
‘Make Your Mark’ fundraising project for the
Edgar Tower. He has also been a welcome ‘dep’
in the back row of the choir. We wish him well
for the future.
Darren Steele, Head
Stonemason of the Cathedral,
was given the prestigious
award of Master Craftsman
by the Livery Company
Skills Council at a ceremony
on 2 February. The award
was presented to Darren by
the Lord Mayor of London.
Mark Richards left the stonemasons’
department to embark on a new career as a
lorry driver after working at the Cathedral for
twelve and a half years.
Luke Tovey (left) has
returned to the Cathedral
as a full-time member of the
stonemasons’ department.
In December Steve Smith
celebrated his 25th year as a
member of staff. Steve who
is head of the maintenance
team started at the Cathedral as a member
of the stonemasons’ department.
Baby joy!
Congratulations to head verger James and his
wife Mollie who are pleased to announce the
birth of their son Henry William Prior, who
was born on Friday 20 February, weighing
7Ib 14oz.
In Memoriam...
Henry Powe was a tireless supporter of the
Cathedral’s Adopt-A-Book scheme. He was a
regular worshipper at the Cathedral and was
often seen in and around the buildings. We
remember his wife Rosemarie at this time.
Cynthia Gilbert was a welcomer in the
Cathedral. She will be missed by both staff
and fellow volunteers.
Michael Kenney who died on 5 January 2015
aged 76, had been the Cathedral’s head server
for a great many years, then after retirement
gave five more years’ valuable help as a
voluntary verger until 2009. He gave much
time to the younger members of the Cathedral
community, giving many young servers their
first training.
Louis Huband, the longest-serving member
of our vergers team, died on 16 March 2015,
aged 85. He started work in the Cathedral in
the mid-eighties, but dated his involvement
back to his confirmation here seventy years
ago by Bishop Bill Cash. After retirement he
continued on as a volunteer, taking particular
responsibility for the 1.05pm Eucharist every
Wednesday up until last November when
his cancer recurred after remission. He will
be widely missed.
