“ Remembering the past but also conserving for
the future
“
Contents
From the Dean
2015 is an important year in the life
of the Cathedral.
We will play our part in the
nationwide commemoration of the
sealing of Magna Carta in 1215,
making the most of our unique
connection to King John, who is buried
here. We are lending John’s will and
other items to the British Library for
their major Magna Carta exhibition.
We will be continuing the
commemorations into next year,
to mark the eighth centenary of John’s death. Not a popular
monarch – but his burial here prompted the start of the
glorious Gothic rebuilding of the Cathedral, and his son
Henry III became one of our great benefactors.
Rebuilding – or at least refurbishment and repair – continue
as ever. The Song School has been splendidly refurbished,
and the parlour (or vergers’ vestry) is about to be. The library
ceiling, necessitating the removal of the books to safe storage,
is in progress and the repair of the great east windows is
about to begin. Scaffolding has gone up on the Edgar Tower
for the start of a long programme of repair.
Remembering the past – but also conserving for the future.
Thank you for your part in the continuing history of
Worcester Cathedral.
