Woodworking Skills

National 3/4
Course Outline
The course is of a practical nature, workshop based and will provide learners with opportunities to acquire
and develop skills for life and skills for work. In particular marking out, cutting, shaping and finishing
materials. Learners develop safe working practices in workshop environments, practical creativity and
problem-solving skills, and knowledge of sustainability issues in a practical woodworking context.
Apart from giving an insight into industrial practice and standards. This course will help with the
development of self confidence, manual dexterity and control, perseverance, maturity and spatial
awareness.
There are 3 units of study at National 3 level:
Working with tools: Developing knowledge of and skills in the use a range of common tools and equipment.
Working materials : Developing skills in working with wood and metal.
Making an item: Developing skills in making an item including interpreting diagrams, applying tools and
materials knowledge and skills and evaluating their finished work.
There are 3 units of study at National 4 level:
Flat-frame Construction: Developing skills in the use of woodworking tools and in the preparation and
production of basic flat-frame woodworking joints and assemblies. Learners will learn to read and follow
