Course Outline
National 4 & 5
The course provides learners with two main units of study, namely 2D Graphics and 3D/Pictorial Graphics.
2D Graphic Communication – 2 dimensional graphics, such as plans, elevations, sections, site layouts,
schematics etc. 2D Illustration.
3D and Pictorial Graphic Communication – 3 dimensional graphics such as isometrics, perspectives,
planometrics etc. 3D Illustration.
Graphic Communication Project – Create/recreate the Preliminary, Production and Promotional graphics for
a manufactured item.
Opportunities to develop both manual and CAD/CG (computer graphics) skills exist in each unit.
Knowledge of colour, illustration and presentation techniques permeate the course.
The Graphic Communication Project will allow learners to extend and apply their knowledge across the units
in a project of their own choice.
National 5 – As above. The project and an examination will provide course assessment.

Purpose and Aims
National 4 & 5
To enable pupils to gain skills in reading, interpreting and creating the types of graphic communication found
in all areas of industry, commerce and leisure.
To develop spatial awareness and visual literacy through the:• use of equipment, materials and software;
• application of standards and protocols;
• understanding of the impact of graphic communication technologies on our environment and society.
Information regarding typical learners who might take the course
National 4 & 5
Learners who might take the course will have a highly developed visual sense; a desire to communicate
through visual means; an interest in both paper and computer based graphics; an interest in pursuing skills at
the heart of Graphic Design, Engineering, Architecture, Construction, Surveying and Mapping and Virtual
Environments.
