Course Structure and Conditions of Award
National 4
This qualification is not graded and is internally assessed. Learners must pass internal assessments in all
three mandatory units. The added value unit is assessed by an assignment completed in class.
National 5
This qualification is graded (A, B, C, D or Fail) and is both internally and externally assessed. Learners must
pass internal assessments in all three mandatory units. The added value unit is assessed by an assignment
completed in class and by an external SQA examination.

Assessment
Internal assessments can take several forms, e.g. written questions, participation in group tasks,
presentations etc.
Review of practical units and submitted written work completed in class is internally assessed with a Pass or
Fail mark.
National 5 candidates will sit a written exam and all practical folios are submitted to SQA for grading A-D.
