Course Structure and Conditions of Award
National 4
This qualification is not graded and is internally assessed. Learners must pass internal assessments in all
three mandatory units. The added value unit is assessed by an assignment completed in class.
National 5
This qualification is graded (A, B, C, D or Fail) and is both internally and externally assessed. Learners must
pass internal assessments in all three mandatory units. The added value unit is assessed by an assignment
completed in class and by an external SQA examination.

Assessment
Internal assessments can take several forms, e.g. written questions, participation in group tasks,
presentations etc. All will be completed in class and will be graded Pass/Fail.
At National 5, the exam will be administered and marked by the SQA. The National 5 Assignment will be
administered by the school but marked by the SQA.

Progression
National 4 will provide a pathway to: National 4 in other Social Subjects, National 5 Geography, National 5 in
other Social Subjects, college/training courses, employment.
National 5 will provide a pathway to: National 5 in other Social Subjects, Higher and Advanced Higher in
Geography, Higher in other Social Subjects, college/training courses, university courses, employment.
