INTRODUCTION
Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) represents a different approach to learning in schools.
With the introduction of a Curriculum for Excellence, every child is entitled to experience a broad
general education up to the end of S3. This entitlement will enable pupils to develop knowledge
and thinking and build on the outcomes and experiences of the primary years. In S3, however, the
curriculum will be delivered in two parts : the CORE curriculum, studied by all pupils and
ELECTIVES (to introduce pupil choice).
At the end of S3 pupils will begin the Senior Phase. The Senior Phase can be regarded as that
which takes place in the final stages of compulsory education and beyond – normally around age
15-18. The Senior Phase builds firmly on the Experiences and Outcomes a young person will have
achieved through the broad general education from S1-S3.
It is envisaged that all courses in S4, S5 and S6 will lead to a national certificate. These will be at
different levels: SCQF levels 4, 5, 6 and 7. At the end of S3 pupils will choose examinable subjects
in six options. At the end of each of S3, S4 and S5, pupils will choose a new curriculum for the
following year, based on current aspirations for future career or Further Education.
Any course choice booklet cannot possibly provide all the information that you might want to
know about subjects. Take every opportunity to ask questions of teaching staff and hopefully you
will have sufficient information to be able to make sensible decisions when Course Choice time
takes place between March and April.
