Race Relations in the USA 1918 – 1968 Modern Studies Government and decision making in Scotland, Equality in Society – Health and Wealth, The United States of America Purpose and Aims The aim of this course is to develop, within a balanced structure, the candidate’s knowledge and understanding of Geography, History and Modern Studies. The necessary skills involved in all three subjects will also be developed. Information regarding typical learners who might take the course Social Subjects at National 3 is a mixture of Geography, History and Modern Studies. It is an ideal course for those who find it difficult to cope with long written examinations. The type of work covered in the class will be varied and should result in three National 3 awards over the two years without having to sit any exams in the hall. Course Structure and Conditions of Award You will study three topics in each of the three subjects. If you pass a short assessment in each of the topics then you pass the course. The assessments will be completed when you and your teacher agree that you are ready. Assessment The assessments will require pupils to demonstrate basic knowledge and understanding of geographical, historical, and contemporary issues. They will also have to evaluate straightforward sources. Each assessment will last a maximum of 25 minutes. Three assessments must be passed to gain an award in each subject. Progression A National 3 award in any of the three social subjects will lead to study at National 3 level in other parts of the curriculum or to National 4 study in the Social Subjects. 29
