Purpose and Aims

understanding of Geography, History and Modern Studies. The necessary skills involved in all three subjects
will also be developed.
Information regarding typical learners who might take the course
Social Subjects at National 3 is a mixture of Geography, History and Modern
Studies. It is an ideal course for those who find it difficult to cope with long
written examinations. The type of work covered in the class will be varied and
should result in three National 3 awards over the two years without having to sit
any exams in the hall.
Course Structure and Conditions of Award
You will study three topics in each of the three subjects. If you pass a short assessment in each of the topics
then you pass the course. The assessments will be completed when you and your teacher agree that you are
ready.
Assessment
The assessments will require pupils to demonstrate basic knowledge and understanding of geographical,
historical, and contemporary issues. They will also have to evaluate straightforward sources. Each
assessment will last a maximum of 25 minutes. Three assessments must be passed to gain an award in each
subject.
Progression
A National 3 award in any of the three social subjects will lead to study at National 3 level in other parts of
the curriculum or to National 4 study in the Social Subjects.
