Life on Earth
In this unit, pupils will explore relationships between living things. This will include world ecosystems,
evolution, natural selection and competition, and the role of micro organisms.
Added Value Unit
In this unit, pupils will investigate a topical issue in biology and how it affects society and/or the
environment.
Conditions of award
To achieve the National 4 Biology course, pupils must pass all of the units detailed above.
National 5
This course has three compulsory units.
Cell Biology
In this unit, pupils will explore the structure of cells and the process that take place inside cells. This will
include the study of the transport of substances, photosynthesis and respiration, as well as DNA, proteins
and biotechnology.
Multicellular Organisms
In this unit, pupils will explore processes that occur in animals and plants which ensure their survival. This will
include the study of reproduction and inheritance, the need for transport within living things, digestion,
control and communication and health.

All units are internally assessed on a pass/fail basis. National 4 Courses are not graded.

All units are internally assessed on a pass/fail basis. Pupils will be externally assessed in a final exam, at the
end of the course.
