Assessment At National 4 the pupil will be awarded a pass which is the equivalent of a Standard Grade General award. The structure of the course contains a number of class tests as part of a continual assessment model. These assessments will test the pupil’s ability in all four modes of the course; Reading, Writing, Talk and Listening. National 5 will be assessed on the four modes in school but will also have a final external examination. Grades at National 5 will be A-D (with A being best). Regular attendance and effort will greatly improve the likelihood of pupils achieving a qualification. Progression All pupils, no matter the level they have achieved, have the opportunity to progress further in S5. This will be by following either; the next level of National course or the Higher course. As well as English courses pupils can choose from courses which link with English. These courses cover topics such as: literacy, media, communication and others. 16
