National Trust Orford Ness
April is a time of transition on the
Ness. Wintering birds such as golden
plover which have been here in large
fl ocks are leaving for their breeding
grounds in the North. Breeding birds
like oystercatcher and lapwing are
pairing up and prospecting for nest
sites on the grazing marshes. Human
visitors will be returning and they will
be able to see young lambs gambolling
around the fi elds, early nesting birds
defending nests and possibly eggs or
young and hares chasing each other
across the shingle.
Sensitive Chaos - fl ow, change and
futures on Orford Ness: From April to
October 2019, the
Orford Ness will be hosting works by
environmental artist, Antony Lyons.
As a creative researcher attached
to the Heritage Futures academic
project, Lyons creates ‘geopoetic’
responses to landscape situations
that are ‘in-between’, and undergoing
transformation. The presented works
refl ect his explorations with people
and landscape, based on visits over the
past two years. Working with invited
participants, he will use image and
sound installation to give exposure to
human, non-human and biophysical
aspects of this unique place.
We are looking forward to welcoming
visitors back to the Ness on Good
Friday when we will be opening in
time for the Easter Bank Holiday
weekend and will be offering the
Cadbury Easter Egg Hunt nature trail
on those four days.

TH E FLYER | A PR IL 2019
Thomas Marshall Education Fund
Sunday 10th
February
was a very
busy day
for Thomas
Marshall
trustees and volunteers at the
Valentine’s T4Thomas. A roomful of
happy people in two sittings drinking
tea and enjoying homemade scones,
cakes and sandwiches helped us
raise around £1,000 to help support
the education of young people in
Mozambique.
However, we are not resting on our
laurels. In 2007 a young Joanna Eden
captivated the audience at Picnic
Jazz at The Pavilion in Orford with
her pure voice and outstanding piano
playing. We are delighted that she
has agreed to include Orford Church
in her national Truth Tree tour to help
raise funds for the Thomas Marshall
Education Fund. Joanna says: “I’m
so excited to be touring this album
to beautiful churches, chapels and
cathedrals all over the country”.
Lincolnshire born Joanna Eden wrote
and performed her fi rst song age
seven. The daughter of a musician and
a drama teacher she could read music
before she could write, studied piano
from age 4 and left university with
her fi rst tour, an all-consuming love
of Ella Fitzgerald and a weakness for
drummers.
Joanna has been a singing teacher for
12 years and is so proud that her fi rst
student Sam Smith has become an
international star and highest selling
debut artist in the US. She began
teaching Sam when he was just ten
years old, coached him throughout his
childhood and introduced him to song
writing, co-writing and producing his
fi rst demo tracks. She is a vocal coach
for the popular music and performing
arts degree courses at Anglia Ruskin
University.
So, if you like the music of Joni
Mitchell, Carole King, James Taylor
and Kate Bush we can guarantee
you a wonderful evening with great
music in the magnifi cent acoustic of
St. Bartholomew’s Church in Orford on
Saturday 6th April. Tickets only £12.50.
Doors and bar open at 7.00 pm.
Sunday 10th June is the date for this
year’s T4Thomas Garden Party at
Chantry Cottage in Orford. This very
popular annual event is one of our
most well attended events which
generates signifi cant funds for our
aims to support education for young
people in Mozambique. Starting with
bacon rolls and tea from 10.00 am,
through delicious lunches to afternoon
tea before fi nishing around 4.00pm.
No need for tickets, just turn up and
enjoy this very relaxed event with
arguably the tastiest food and the best
views in the Suffolk Coastal area.
Wickham Market Library
Wickham Market Library will again
be holding its special Easter Reading
Challenge from 6-20 April. The
challenge works a bit like the summer
reading challenge with children
challenged to read as many books
as they can over the Easter holidays.
Please contact or visit the library for
more details nearer the time. (pic from
previous year attached!)
The library is also soon launching a
new ‘Book Angels’ project involving
volunteers visiting and reading to
residents at the nearby Lehman House
care home. If anyone is interested
in getting involved please contact
Wickham Market Library.
Local people might also be interested
in the library’s family history sessions.
These are free drop-in sessions which
take place every two weeks on a
Saturday from 2pm to 4pm.
Mat Bayfi eld is coming to Wickham
Market library on 17th April at 7.30pm
to give a talk.
