teams try to shut her down she has found a way to come through for us.”
Marian welcomed Finlandia for their first home series of the year on Nov. 15-16.
A strong performance by the defensive corps and junior Amanda Alexander provided
to be enough to earn the first shutout of the year as the Sabres rode the wave of goals
from Waigand and Leslie to win 2-0. Looking for the series sweep, Marian would need
the heroics of Laurie who scored twice in the third period to tie the game back up at
two. Freshman Rian Lennon would cap off the third period comeback with the gamewinner with less than three minutes remaining.
“Rian has stepped up big time both offensively and defensively for us,” Kivi said.
“She has gotten stronger as the season moved on. Right now, Rian is playing more like
a junior or senior rather than a freshman.”
Through the first five games of the season, the Sabres were sitting at 3-2 with a
shutout and a series sweep to their name. The good fortune began to fade as they
dropped their next five contests by a combined score of 19-6. Over this stretch, the
squad worked through their problems, clawing their way to a 2-2 draw against #8 UWSuperior on Dec. 14.
