@LadySabreH oops BASKETBALL NOTES
LAST TIME OUT
The Sabres registered their first victory of the campaign with a 78-63 win over visiting
Dominican University last Saturday, Nov. 30. Marian led for most of the way, putting three
players in double figures led by senior Sarah Albert’s 21 points. Dani Huray had an allaround great effort with 15 points, six rebounds and six assists in the win, while Sarah
Olewinski poured in a career-high 19 points.
Marian turned the ball over just seven times, while converting 16 points on 14 Dominican
miscues. The Sabres took a 42-29 lead into halftime and led by as many as 19 points on the
way to a 15-point victory.
PILLAGING THE RAIDERS
MSOE enters the week with a 2-2 overall mark, including a 1-0 record in league play after
outlasting Rockford in the conference opener on Saturday. The Raiders led by just two
points at the half and overcame an 11-point deficit just over five minutes into the second
half. Shannon Larson led three scorers in double figures with 15 points, while Megan Kroll
registered a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
The Raiders have had success in all aspects of the game early on this season. They
currently lead the league in steals per game (11.5) and offensive rebounds per game (15.2),
while ranking second in rebound margin (5.5), free throws made (19.5) and points per game
(73.5). Holly Denfeld leads the way with 13.5 points and 8.8 rebounds per game, while Larson
trails closely at 11.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game, adding nearly two steals as well.
ALL-TIME VS. MSOE
Marian has dominated the all-time series against MSOE, leading 35-13 entering Wednesday’s
match-up in Fond du Lac. The Sabres are winners of three of the last four after splitting with
the Raiders in two match-ups a season ago. Both teams protected their home floor with the
Raiders coming out on top in the previous meeting, 55-53, in Milwaukee back on Jan. 16.
FROM WAY DOWNTOWN
Like it did last year, Marian is once again leading the NACC and rank fourth in the nation
in three’s made per game. However, the biggest difference from last year has been the
increase in makes and efficiency.
The Sabres are averaging 10.2 makes on 24.4 attempts per game in 2013-14 compared to
8.3 makes on 26.3 attempts last year. The Sabres are currently first in the league in threepoint percentage at 41.8, a 10.3 percent increase from last year’s squad, which finished fifth
in that department.
STIFF NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE
The Sabres have faced four Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponents
to open the 2013-14 season. Marian is allowed to schedule just five non-conference
opponents due to a 20-game conference schedule and, this season, all five will be against
state schools. The Sabres will face UW-Oshkosh at Kolf Arena Dec. 18, for their fifth and
final regular season non-conference game.
One of the more dominant leagues among Division III conferences, Marian’s WIAC
opponents have combined for a 20-12 mark through Dec. 3.
FOR THE 42nd TIME
Marian University women’s basketball begins its 42nd season in program history when it
faces UW-Stout on the road Tuesday, Nov. 19. The Sabres played their first-ever season
under former Head Coach Bruce Prall back in 1972-73.
LIVING UP TO THE “BILL
”ING
Head Coach Bill Peters, who enters his fourth season at the helm, has revived a struggling
program that won just 19 games combined in the three seasons leading up to his arrival.
Peters was the third-fastest in Marian history to 32 wins over his first three seasons.
