aw and being a CEO

are two difficult

positions to have to

play everyday. You’d be a strong individual if you decide to take on the responsibilities that these two jobs present, and the job doesn’t get any easier if you’re a female. Recent statistics have found that for every 10 men that are recruited in law or as a CEO, 1 woman will have also gotten one of those two occupations. Some more surprising numbers would include that half of 400 companies have no women in their offices. These are a few examples that women are challenged with not having the opportunity to get a prestigious position. In our very own school, it would be something much more subtle. To put an example, only 40% of the robotics club is made up of girls and 5 girls submitted their grades saying they deserved a lower grade than they deserved.

And although the problem is an actual occurrence, we can’t just say there is a challenge without there being a reason. Because of this, a constellation map is made so we can pinpoint what area we would like to have an intervention. A challenge constellation is a graph used to jot down why our challenge happens. We ask ourselves why it happens five times and if we see that there are some reasons that repeat, those become root causes. As seen in the constellation above, my root causes were: gender stereotypes, men are seen as the better fit in leadership positions, women have side priorities to take care of such as family and household, and throughout history, men have been the leader most of the time. Once we identify what our root causes are, we can say what the effects of those causes are which can also be seen in my constellation. One effect stated above is that women get labeled as “bossy”, they stop self advocating, and get discouraged to keep trying to get the leadership position they want. We can also begin plotting a series of different types of intervention possibilities and singling them down to the best suitable one to tackle our challenge and making a vision of what we believe the world worlduld look like if the challenge we are dealing with never existed.
