Written by Brittany She’s got that summertime sadness. She’s a little scarlet starlet and she rolls like the rolling stones. That’s right, I present to you, your Queen, Lana. Del. Rey. (Endless applause and flower-throwing follows.) I cannot stress my absolute adoration for this fabulous artist with the mystical, entrancing voice. Del Rey was born bearing the name Elizabeth Wooldridge Grant, but later, upon finalising her career, changed it to Lana Del Rey as she wanted something that sounded like summer, and paradise. She has described herself musically as a “self-styled gangster Nancy Sinatra” and “Lolita lost in the hood”. Her first album was digital, called Lana Del Rey and was released in January, 2010. However, she has stayed relatively under the radar until her second album, Born To Die was released at the beginning of 2012, which was critically acclaimed. It is the fifth best-selling album of 2012, and contains killer tracks such as Born To Die, Summertime Sadness, Video Games, and Blue Jeans. Later, her EP, Paradise was released, which awarded her a spot as number ten on the Billboard 200. As well as music, Lana also shows interest in cinematography, as the short film, Tropico starring three of her songs was released in late 2013. Not only that, but she has contributed music to The Great Gatsby soundtrack, and more recently, Maleficent. Del Rey has also entered campaigns for both H&M and endorsement for Jaguar. Its official, Lana Del Rey is taking over the world. Lana’s career definitely hasn’t been all smooth, as she has been endlessly criticized ever since her live performance on Saturday Night Live on the 14th of January, 2012 went astray. Personally, I think Lana Del Rey is the most amazing woman, and when I heard about her upcoming album, Ultraviolence, I almost had a heart attack. And may I tell you, it did not disappoint! For those of you, who are not yet fans, make sure to check her out ASAP. ○●
