Did some country stuff this year too— worked with Maren Morris and had a blast. I was filling a gap while she was between FOH guys and just jumped in.
[ WM ] Are you using Dante? If so – when and how?
[ Lee ] Yeah, I use Dante all the time. It’ s the backbone of most modern systems I’ m involved with. I use it for multitrack recording, virtual soundcheck, routing between consoles, wireless, DSP— basically anything that needs clean, flexible audio transport. Sometimes it’ s the main protocol, and other times it’ s running in parallel with another digital format, depending on the system. Once you get your head around it, it’ s hard to imagine working without it.
[ WM ] You have been an educator in the Church Sound arena for a while. Tell us what you are doing now for training opportunities for tech teams? Team BlackBox?
[ Lee ] Most of my training and coaching now happens through BlackBox. We’ re not a traditional training company— we’ re church technology advocates. But we’ ve built out a range of offerings that give churches exactly what they need, whether it’ s design, strategy, commissioning, or team development. Training isn’ t a separate thing— it’ s embedded in everything we do.
The team we’ ve built is made up of some of the most influential people in the space. They’ re working on everything from Mr. Beast and Nike content to the biggest church building projects in the country. We’ ve got guys designing recording studios, touring with A-list pop artists, and shaping the future of how AVL works in both the church and the real world. That level of experience— real mixers, real designers, real practitioners— gives us an edge. We bring that back into the church and help teams build systems that are both excellent and sustainable.
