gear shows— manufacturers paying for stage time, and sales guys teaching sessions that were more about selling product than actually helping people grow. It was pretty lame.
So we built something different. MXU grew fast— we took it to cities all over the world and eventually launched an online subscription platform for ongoing training. Thousands of churches jumped on board. I ended up selling and exiting the company in 2024. They’ ve changed a lot since then. As far as I know, they’ re not doing in-person events anymore.
[ WM ] Do you train other members on your home church tech teams? What is your approach to that?
[ Lee ] I actually just attend a small church in town, and I’ m not involved with the production team there. Most of my time is spent working with churches around the world through BlackBox. We act as church technology advocates— helping churches navigate the design, install, and execution of major AVL projects. But we’ re not just consultants— we’ re in the trenches with teams.
That means I’ m constantly on-site doing hands-on training, coaching teams through new gear, dialing in systems, and helping them build confidence. Every project is different, so the approach has to be flexible. But whether it’ s a one-room church or a full campus build, the goal is the same: help people make better decisions, own their environment, and lead with clarity.
[ WM ] Do you do any audio work outside of the church?
[ Lee ] Yeah, I’ ve done a ton outside the church. I’ ve mixed for a long list of worship artists over the years— UNITED, Elevation Worship, Passion, Maverick City, Lecrae, Jesus Culture, Switchfoot. I’ ve also done conferences, festivals, and corporate events across the country.
