mids with no bass. The biggest takeaways after removing the Pioneer-MM a from the gig bag is that Furch’ s Open-Pore finish makes it feel like the wood has no finish at all which feels great under your fingers. It also allows the wood to resonate more freely than when it is covered in a thick finish. The second feature that caught my attention was how well-rounded and edged all of the frets were. There were no sharp edges on either side of the neck and the frets were rounded to perfection on the top of the neck also.
The Pioneer MM a predominantly constructed from African mahogany for the top, sides, back and neck. Ebony is utilized for the fretboard and bridge only. This instrument also features Furch’ s unique CNR System Active neck joint which instead of utilizing a traditional dovetail joint features two neck bolts that can be used to adjust the action to your playing style. If anyone has recently paid for a neck reset, you know what a savings this can be on a guitar in the long term. Another feature that I’ m fan of on the Pioneer, and some other Furch models, is the Booster Soundport. Essentially these are five narrow slots approximately 1 ½” long on the upper bout of the guitar that allow the player to hear the guitar sound better. The Furch soft V neck is very comfortable to the hand and the neck and fret details speak to a higher-grade instrument and not a travel guitar. The Pioneer MM is a fun strummer and player that is hard to put down. The sound is much warmer and fuller that you expect from an instrument this size.
Plugged in the Pioneer sounds like a full-sized acoustic guitar. I understand why Furch put this guitar in the travel category but it kind of does the instrument a dis-service. This is an ideal practice, Praise team, youth ministry or songwriter guitar. If you close your eyes and play it, sonically the guitar will fool you. Thanks in part to the all-mahogany construction, Furch bracing and the quality craftsmanship throughout.
The starting price on the Furch Pioneer-MM is $ 967, but I highly recommend the optional LR Baggs electronics which add $ 185 to the cost. The Pioneer might be considered a travel guitar, but it exceeds this category with top level playability and sound that will surprise you.
