guitarist’ s house to practice. I always really loved B. B. King, and SRV, but I never really tried to learn that musical language. It was a really eye opening experience the first time I sat in on a blues jam. My friend Shane invited me to come and play with him and an old friend of his. Turns out this guy is in the local Blues Hall Of Fame. I got absolutely demolished by the changes and found that I had no clue what I was doing. I would like to say I’ m much better at walking the bass now.
I am fortunate to have lots of artistic and musical friends. I really cherish the time I get to spend with them collaborating in a studio context. Some of my favorite things that I have written for a song were at 11pm when everyone in the session is a little loopy.
[ WM ] What are you using to record with? ProTools? Plug-ins? Tell us about your home studio.
[ Davie ] At home I use Logic Pro for tracking bass and general music production. I love plugins. I’ m a big fan of the SSL E-Channel, CLA- 2A, CLA-76, SSL G-Comp.
Right now I have a very modest home set up. I have a pair of Yamaha HS5’ s, a Polk Audio subwoofer, and a Scarlett Clarett 4Pre. For my main preamp I use a cAPI 500 series clone. Lately I’ ve grown quite fond of mixing on headphones. For that I’ m using a pair of Sony MD-7506’ s. Nothing crazy, but it all works great for my needs!
[ WM ] Your thoughts on modeling units vs. analog?
[ Davie ] The guys at church are almost all using amp sims at this point, and they’ re sounding awesome. I do prefer amps though. It’ s just more fun to feel a speaker moving behind you.
[ WM ] Can you mention one or two worship albums that inspire your own worship bass playing?
