In this issue, we celebrate many
historical gems – from family history
to the history of a nationally known
company, born in Wyoming…to a new
generation exploring the historical
craft of cowboy poetry and a look at exploring a
Wyoming historical gem in the wintertime. We
thought we’d take a moment in this editor’s letter
to pay tribute to another historical gem celebrating
an anniversary – the Wyoming Union at the
University of Wyoming.
The Wyoming Union opened March 3, 1939, and
for many generations the Union has been the place
where stories were crafted. Every UW alumni has
a story to share. Levi and I were students at UW
from 1997-2002. We joined a group of friends that
gathered many Saturday nights in the bowling alley
in the Union’s basement. We splurged on a weekly
lunch at the Taco John’s in the basement near the
Beer Gardens, and when I mentioned the Gardens
to Levi he added “…the place that had that big ol’
tropical tree in it.” I remember math sessions in the
basement, and standing not-too-patiently in the
doorway to the computer lab waiting for a machine
to open up. (This was pre-iPad,
heck a laptop was a luxury to
us and we had to save to buy a
cell phone…)
What is your story? UW will be celebrating
the 75th anniversary of the Wyoming Union
through October 23. Visit uwyo.edu/union/75thanniversary to submit your story and to view the
list of events happening throughout October. There
is also a wonderful gallery full of pictures from
the different decades of the Wyoming Union. We
would also love to hear your stories and see your
pictures from the Wyoming Union! May it live and
create many more memories for years to come!
Til Next Time…
