WLM: What is the most
interesting Wyoming story
you’ve ever written?
BS: My favorite story was a series
of stories and editorials that we
did in 1990, which exposed how
the U. S. Government had hired
local contractors to dig uranium in
Jeffrey City after World War II.
These men all contracted serious
cancers over the decades and died
horrible deaths.
With the help of former Senator
Al Simpson, we exposed this
story and then supported Senator
Simpson as he got a bill through Congress that provided a $100 million
trust fund to help these folks. Simpson ended up nominating us for a
Pulitzer Prize for that effort. That was my favorite story of all time.
WLM: What prompted you to create your book series?
BS: I have had parallel Wyoming careers in journalism and also in
tourism. We have published over four million magazines promoting
Wyoming tourism over the decades. Governor Mike Sullivan appointed
me to the state travel commission in 1979 and ever since then I have been
busy promoting the state’s tourism efforts.
In 2007, I wrote a column called Wyoming’s 7 Greatest Natural Wonders.
Several folks including former tourism directors Gene Bryan and Randy
Wagner suggested, with my publishing background, that I do a coffee
table book on that theme. I finally did the first book in 2012. We followed
it up in 2014 with a companion book called MY WYOMING.
With 2015 being the state’s 125th anniversary, both Milward Simpson,
the director of the Arts, Parks & Cultural Resources Commission and
