WLM inspired your work? BJ: I am constantly being inspired by different photographers. I would say the photographers that have inspired me the most have been Thomas Mangelsen and Art Wolfe. The images these two produce are awe-inspiring. Since moving to Wyoming I have been following fellow Caper resident Chuck Kimmerle. Chuck’s often minimalist and high-contrast images are incredibly powerful. Last, but not least, would be Michael Slade’s body of work titled the Great Salt Lake Photographic Survey. Michael has been a personal mentor and friend for many years now and the person who has pushed me the most to become a better photographer. Being active outdoors individuals, my wife (Krista) and I immediately began to explore our new home state. What we found was so much more than the mineral extraction and national parks Wyoming is often portrayed as in the media. We discovered a diverse wildlife population, snowcapped mountains, grand deserts, and a rich history here in Wyoming. The more we explore this great state, the more I am compelled to photograph it and share its beauty with the world. WLM: As a photographer and new resident, what was the first place you | my Wyoming craving had to travel to photograph in Wyoming when you arrived? BJ: I have always been drawn to the desert and my first trip, upon arriving in Wyoming, was to the Great Divide Basin to photograph wild horses. I had never observed wild horses and it was a trip I will not soon forget. We were able to observe two groups of horses, and lucky enough to photograph one, in the Stewart Creek Herd Management Area along the eastern edge of the Great Divide Basin. WLM: You photograph a good deal of wildlife. How do you work with wildlife to create your images? BJ: I use a lot of the lessons I have learned hunting to photograph wildlife. It really boils down to respect for the www.wyolifestyle.com 31
