My family owned a ranch here from 1959 until 1996. As a kid, I
enjoyed riding the tractor with Charlie Parsons while he cut hay
with a sickle bar mower. There was little traffic and few strangers.
There were just a couple restaurants where ranch hands mostly had
pie and coffee after a long day’s work. I sometimes lament the loss
of those simpler times. But that was a hard existence, with limited
opportunities for gainful employment or quality entertainment.
I live here because I can make a good living as a responsible real
estate agent. I enjoy helping people find and make a home here. I
have also loved helping old time residents sell their properties and
harvest their gains. My contribution to the growth of Jackson can
be offset by my work protecting wildlife habitat. I am a founding
member of the Wyoming Nature Conservancy, and I am involved
in a project to preserve land along Flat Creek. I can listen to E.O.
Wilson, my favorite naturalist and philosopher, speak at the Center
for the Arts. I can see remarkable new films at the Wildlife Film
Festival. I can float and fish the Snake River, which is still an
incredible wild fishery with native cutthroat trout. I can ride my
bike along our new pathways from town to Jenny Lake. And all
the while, I can enjoy the company of great friends that remain in
Jackson, and those that are newly drawn to this remarkable valley.
