considered caste system as a disturbance in
society. He also cut off his surname at an early
age. After joining the Kahsi Vidyapeeth and
graduating in philosophy, he got the attribute
name “Shastri”.
He also fought against dowry system and he
also implemented the same in his life. He dint
expect or accept any dowry from his wife’s
side. He rather took khadi fabric and spinning
cloth as dowry. So, by this we learned that he
wasn’t a man who said but did it!
He lived for public service- When Shastri was
jailed, his family received pension of Rs.50. His
wife, visited jail to meet him and said that she

is able to save Rs. 10 every month from
his pension. Listening to this Shastri asked
the Government to reduce his pension of
Rs.10 And offer the money to needy.
Post independence, he was appointed
as the Minister of Police and Transport
Control. When he was in the post, he
made great amendments which are still
continuing till today. He placed women in
post of conductors for public transport.
Being a leader, Shastri always showed
integrity to public. In, 1956 there was a
tragic train accident and 142 people died in
the incident. When this incident happened,
