First Sikh -American As
New Jersey’s AG
For the first time, a Sikh-American named Gurbir S Grewal, is
appointed as the New Jersey’s AG. He is a prominent Indian-
American lawyer. Following the state Senate approval for his
nomination, Mr. Grewal (44) has become the first Sikh attorney
general of the US state of New Jersey.
During the confirmation hearing
in front of the Senate Judiciary
Committee, Mr. Grewal said,
“I never imagined that my life’s
journey could bring me here
today,”
“I’m extremely humbled, and
I’m looking forward to getting
started,” he said. “My first order
of business is to introduce
myself and get up to speed.”
Following the Senate approval
for his nomination with a 29-0
vote, Grewal became the
nation’s first Sikh state attorney
general. Later, at a private
ceremony, Grewal had sworn
into office, reports NJ.com.
A registered Democrat, Grewal
was made Bergen County’s top
law enforcement official in 2016
by the Governor Chris Christie.
Earlier, he worked as the chief
of the economic crimes unit at
the US Attorney’s Office under
former federal prosecutor Paul
Fishman, according to the
reports.
Grewal told lawmakers that
he would focus on building
relationships between
police and the communities,
besides putting efforts to
stem the opioid crisis. He
also gave a word to direct
the office’s prosecuting
arm i.e. the Division of
Criminal Justice to work with
prosecutors in the state’s
21 counties to coordinate
response to the heroin
epidemic.
