Indian American Becomes
First Woman Assistant Secretary of State

Manisha Singh, an Indian
American, has become the first
woman to be appointed as the
Assistant Secretary of State for
economic and business affairs
in the Trump administration.
Manisha is a congressional
staffer and lawyer. No other
woman till date has taken over
the post previously.
Singh, who was sworn in
by Secretary of State Rex
Tillerson, would be responsible
for advancing American
prosperity, innovation as well as
entrepreneurship worldwide.

Following swearing-in
ceremony, the US State
Department’s Economic &
Business Affairs Bureau
released a tweet that read,
“We are excited to promote
America’s growth and
secure our future under her
leadership!”
Earlier, the Indian born
Singh was the policy adviser
and chief lawyer as well
to the Republican Senator
Dan Sullivan. During
President George W. Bush’s
administration, Manisha had
done a stint as an Deputy
Assistant Secretary of State
in the economic bureau.
It is then that she handled
intellectual property issues,
relations with the World
Trade Organization, and
trade.
Manisha began her political
career as an staffer on the
Senate Foreign Relations
Committee, prior to which,
she was a lawyer in the
international law practice of
a law firm.
