and respected all the religions.
His army also had Muslim
soldiers. His aim was to
dominate and defeat Mughal
rule and establish Maratha

Shivaji as Father of
Indian Navy
Shivaji established a strong
naval in the regions Konkan
and Goa. He played the
important role in Naval force.
Before Shivaji, Indian navy was
taken care by the Cholas in 9th
and 10th century. Maintaining
and regulating the navy forces
was the responsibility of kings.
He successfully protected
the sea trade from the Arabs,
Portuguese, Britishers. He
also organized and built many
sea forts, storage and shelter.
As naval forces took birth
and developed with efforts of
Shivaji, he is called as “Father
of Indian Navy”.

Battle of Sinhagad
The battle took place on
February 4th, 1670. Tanaji
was sent on a mission to
capture Kondana fort which

So, Shivaji renamed the fort
as Sinhagad as a tribute to
Tanaji.
Battle of Surat
The battle took place on
January 5th, 1664, The war
was between Shivaji and
Inayat Khan. The war started
when Shivaji challenged
the ruler of Surat. Shivaji
seized the town for 3
weeks and during this time,
Maratha army took away
all the wealth from Mughal
and Portugese. Later, the
wealth was spent on the
development of Maratha
state.
Battle of Poona
Shaista khan who was
the maternal uncle of
Aurangazeb seized Pune.
He also built a house near
Shivaji’s Lal Mahal and all
this act happened in the
year 1660. Shaista khan
had strong army of 300000.
In later years, Shivaji
Maharaj, entered Khan’s
quarters and killed his sons.

Battle of Mysore Plateau
This battle was between
Shivaji and his step brother
Venkojhi. The battle happened
on November 26, 1677. Shivaji
was the winner of battle and
along with it also won most of
the Mysore plateau. Venkoji’s
wife Dipa Bai came to negotiate
at the time of war. Shivaji
had great respect for women
and he respected his sister in
