Middle/High School News by Maryann Barnett Homecoming 2010 Homecoming 2010 was preceded by Spirit Week. This fun-filled week is planned by the Student Body Council. 2010–2011 SBC officers include: Jose Castillo, president; Travis Waala, vice president; Cody Gannon, treasurer; and Maydee Vande Hey, secretary. The SBC met and decided the daily themes for dress-up for Spirit Week: Monday, Crazy Hair Day; Tuesday, Nerd day; Wednesday, Four Seasons, a new event; Thursday, Opposite Gender Day; and Friday, Red and White Day. For the new theme of Four Seasons each class was given a season (freshmen, spring; sophomores, fall; juniors, summer; and seniors, winter). Spirit Week ended with a pep rally with the bleachers aglow with red and white attire. Points were earned according to the percentage of students participating from each class. This year, the SBC brought back an old tradition—the traveling trophy for the class that accrued the most points for Spirit Week. The class of 2011 won the Spirit Award. The trophy is kept in principal Marla Walsh’s office. Homecoming Queen and King, Mayde VandeHey and Jose Castillo. The ladies of the homecoming court driven by WSD alumni Leonard Peacock. Because WSD was playing the Kansas School for the Deaf for Homecoming this year, the theme of “Wizard of Oz” was chosen for the Homecoming Dance theme. The Homecoming king and queen were elected by the students involved in the fall sports of football, volleyball, and cheerleading. The king and queen, Jose Castillo and Maydee Vande Hey, were crowned during halftime at the football game. Other members of the 2010 Homecoming Court included Travis Waala and Heather Besaw-Benz, Cody Gannon and Amanda Feliciano, and Tony Davis and Hannah Rees.
