Nine Bowlers move on to District Tournament Athletes missing third place by a hair were Wyatt Keller, SarabJeet Singh, and Stephanie Schuyler. Andy Coppola, bowling well above his average of 58 with a 73 and 80, also earned a 4th-place ribbon. 5th-place finishers were Alvin Horton, Anthony Bole, Chas Moritz, Anthony Jacoby, and Chloe Goetsch. Coaches are Mike Coates and Karen DeFalco. Eighteen WSD bowlers competed Sunday, October 17, in the 2010 Special Olympic Area Bowling Tournament in Kenosha. Nine advanced on to District in Milwaukee on Sunday, November 7. Special Olympics Bowling 2010 An exciting part of the tournament was watching Shane Tisa bowl two-handed. His two-handed method creates more power, by increasing ball revolutions per minute. Shane averaged 141 Sunday, scoring 169 for one of his three games and receiving a first-place ribbon. Shane’s highest game at practice is 202. Twohanded bowlers such as Jason Belmonte from Australia have received fame and fortune using this style. More and more high school bowlers are also being coached using two hands and seeing higher average results. The Special Olympic Bowling team has 21 athletes this season. Athletes competed on an individual basis for the first time in many years, instead of in teams or partners, at the Area Tournament in Kenosha on October 17, 2010. The WSD team had several new bowlers this season, and some of them earned first and second place ribbons Sunday. Alex Kubiske, who began the season with an 87 average, scored two games at 128 and 125, making an average of 117 Sunday, and winning a first-place ribbon. Jon Post, who went into the tournament with a solid 20 average, bowled a 48, 38, and 26, boosting his average to almost 38. Brandaun Carter, another new member of the WSD team, bowled 75, 68, and 102, well above his average of 65, earning a red ribbon. Darion Henderson, beginning the season with a 50 average, bowled 64, 56, and 50 Sunday, increasing her average to 59 and also winning a red ribbon. The athletes have been training hard to improve their averages from last year. There have already been turkeys made by Shane Tisa, Alvin Horton, Chas Moritz, and Nick Johnson. Shane has made four turkeys so far, with one turkey including five strikes in a row, that game scoring 202. He is using a unique style with two hands. “The two-handed technique has become popular in the last seven years. You can watch YouTube movies of three athletes who use this style and are legends already,” stated Mike Zellmer, a bowling coach associated with the bowling alley where the team practices. Kadedra Jackson had a successful day, bowling well above her average of 91, with scores of 128, 113, and 102 and earning a blue ribbon. Charly Fleege had a similar success story, coming into the tournament with a 97 average, but bowling 117, 128, and 113, averaging 119 and earning a red ribbon. Third-place ribbon holders were Nick Johnson, bowling 97, 99, and 117, well above his average of 92; and Angel, bowling her average of 77. Fall 2010 - 19
