FIREBIRD SPORTS by Chris Woodfill Boys Basketball 2 wins, 16 losses WSD vs. Berean 25-56 In the tenth game of the season, WSD firebirds struggled throughout the first three quarters trailing by 16-51. In the fourth quarter, the Firebirds scored 9-4. Chip Hurlbut contributed 13 points, six rebounds, and three steals. Michael Glassbrenner followed with eight points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals. WSD vs. Ohio School for the Deaf (CSSD) 37-75 In the opening game of the CSSD tournament the WSD Firebirds fell to Ohio Deaf. Ohio dominated WSD right from the start outscoring WSD in all four quarters. Michael Glassbrenner led the team with 14 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Chip Hurlbut was close behind with 11 points, nine rebounds, and two steals. WSD vs. Michigan School for the Deaf (CSSD) 53-47 In the first victory of the season, WSD beat Michigan Deaf in a nipper of a game. Neither team dominated throughout the game. The points were always close. In this exciting game, Glassbrenner was far and away the leader of the team bringing home 24 points, four rebounds, assists, and steals. Michael racked up the points with 83% and 80% respectively in free throws and field goals. Chip Hurlbut ably contributed with 13 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Barry Ohlsson also helped out with 12 points, eight steals, and three assists. WSD vs. Kansas School for the Deaf (CSSD) 29-71 The euphoria of the first victory was short-lived as the WSD Firebirds were quickly dispatched in a heartbreaking loss to Kansas. The tone of the game was set convincingly by the first quarter where Kansas outscored WSD 22-6. The trend continued throughout the game. Chip Hurlbut was the leader in this game earning 13 points and three rebounds. Michael Glassbrenner and Denton Mallas contributed five points. WSD vs. WCA 60-63 WSD lost in a close game to WCA. It was a hot and close contest throughout. In this ultimately unsuccessful effort, Michael Glassbrenner and Chip Hurlbut were on fire. Michael earned 22 points, 10 assists, four steals, and three rebounds. Chip earned 21 points, five steals, four rebounds, and two assists. Eric Squires ably contributed with seven points and nine rebounds. WSD vs. Keith 54-69 WSD again lost a relatively close one to Keith. WSD kept up with Keith during the first half and was behind by only four points 22-26 at half-time. WSD faltered in the second half, losing by 15 at the end. In this effort, Michael Glassbrenner and Chip Hurlbut led the team with 22 and 15 points respectively. Barry Ohlsson chipped in with 13 points and seven rebounds. WSD vs. Kansas (GPSD) 31-67 WSD lost in the opener of the GPSD tournament to Kansas. In the last match against Kansas, WSD was clobbered. This game proved no different. The tone of the game was convincingly set during the first quarter where WSD was badly outscored by 5-17. The trend continued throughout the game. In this effort, Michael Glassbrenner led with 16 points, three assists, three steals, and two rebounds. WSD vs. Arkansas (GPSD) 43-45 In this close and hard-fought contest against Arkansas, WSD trailed Arkansas throughout the entire game. At the end of third quarter the score was 28-37. During the fourth quarter WSD fought back hard outscoring Arkansas by 15-8. However, it was not enough to defeat Arkansas. In this game, Chip Hurlbut and Michael Glassbrenner earned 18 and 14 points and six and four rebounds respectively. WSD vs. Missouri (GPSD) 66-33 In the second and final victory of the season, WSD very convincingly put the Missouri Deaf on the mat. The outcome was never in doubt as WSD outscored Missouri throughout the game. In this feast, Michael Glassbrenner had quite a buffet with 34 points, 11 steals, six assists and three rebounds.
